It’s Happening Right Now

A Villanelle poem written for my creative writing course at City Lit.

Just came across this article on The Guardian this morning too about toxic pollution found in the deepest ocean trench on Earth, so makes the poem ever more topical.

***

It’s happening right now but we can’t see.
Or maybe we just don’t want to admit
We really messed up this time, didn’t we?

The air’s a haze too hard for us to breathe.
Sky dark with smoke from all the fires we’ve lit.
It’s happening right now but we can’t see.

The water’s foul, there’s no life in the sea.
It’s turned from clear blue to sludge-filled cess pit.
We really messed up this time, didn’t we?

The land is dead, there’s nothing left to eat.
Instead of caretaking, we poisoned it.
It’s happening right now but we can’t see.

No more golden toad, no more honeybee.
Their time’s run out and it’s we who’ve caused it.
We really messed up this time, didn’t we?

We leave in our wake nothing but debris.
A rubbish tip survivors inherit.
It’s happening right now but we can’t see.
We really messed up this time, didn’t we?
